I purchased an Ipod Touch with the expectation that could log into public sites at stores without difficulty, thus allowing me to leave my more cumbersome MacBook Intel (which works everywhere) at home on numerous occasions. Based on two conversations with Apple technical assistance, this is not the case. This was most evident during a recent trip to the Washington DC area, where I attempted to use it at 10 different sites, with success at only two. In all cases, the Touch listed available WIFI options, indicating the ones that were available (not locked). Apple TA explained that the Touch is set up for only one WIFI protocol, and “older” ones will not work, unless I obtain the settings specific to each site and enter them manually. Is this a temporary glitch, to be corrected by a software update or a the next release of the Touch, or one owners must tolerate? In my case the Touch lost most of its utility, and will be returned.
